Reactions in children can vary, especially based upon the kind of diet your child is on. Barring something horrible such as having celiac disease, just about any vegetable-based enzymes supplement, such as Bio88+ (Plus), is great.

But…children are not adults. What size doses should I be giving my child?


Enzyme dosing is by the amount and type of food eaten and not based on age or weight. A good plan is to start with part of one capsule of one product per significant meal or snack. If you forget, go ahead and take the enzymes during the meal and even at the end of the meal. The important point is to take the enzyme, which works on contact. Food stays in the stomach for up to 90 minutes, therefore, introducing enzymes anytime during the meal will still provide benefits. Some people see much better results if they wait 20 to 30 minutes after swallowing enzymes contained in vegetable based capsules before they eat. Apparently the vegetable capsules take longer to dissolve in the stomach environment. Waiting before eating allows time for the capsule to dissolve and sufficiently release the enzymes into the stomach.

When you find yourself living with pain every minute of every hour of every day, just getting up in the morning can seem like too much to ask. When you find it hard to remember the last time you weren’t in pain, it’s not unusual for fear and depression to take hold and drag you into a downward spiral that makes the pain even worse. Even on good days, exercising can still be the last thing you feel like doing.

There’s evidence, however, that exercise may be one of the best things you can do to help manage chronic pain. A recent (2000) study by Martin Hoffman found that moderate exercise reduced the amount of pain people suffering from chronic back-ache perceived they felt. Other anecdotal studies and reports have confirmed that sometimes, activity can work wonders.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXERCISE & PAIN RELIEF

Experts have suggested four possible reasons for the pain-reducing effect of activity. The first has to do with endorphins. These are chemicals your body produces naturally during exercise, which have the same kind of effect as opiates like morphine and codeine. Endorphins actually block the perception of pain, and create a general feeling of wellness, both of which are invaluable to someone with chronic pain.

A second reason is that regular activity helps to improve both the ease with which we fall asleep, and the quality of our rest once we do. Pain, can become more or less difficult to deal with depending on our resource levels. Most sufferers experience difficulty sleeping when the pain is bad, which can prompt another downward spiral. Something that helps us sleep better, means more energy and resources, which in turn, allows us to cope better with the pain we experience.

A third is that exercise helps release tension (see Exercise & Stress for an explanation of why). Tension, stress and frustration, as any sufferer of chronic pain will attest, increase pain levels. This means that anything that helps relax the body will also usually help reduce pain levels.

Finally, if the chronic pain occurs after an injury, targeted exercise can strengthen the muscles around the injury site, taking pressure off the injured tissue. Of course, the wrong kind of exercise can actually re-injure the area too, so it’s important to get professional guidance from a physiotherapist, or a personal trainer who specialises in rehabilitation work, rather than trying to go it alone.

USING EXERCISE TO HELP YOU MANAGE PAIN

An important disclaimer: this article is written assuming that, if you’re experiencing chronic pain, you’re already working with a healthcare professional to manage it (and if not, you need to be!) Check any suggestions you want to try with that professional, and follow their recommendations. Also, if an activity increases your pain levels, don’t do it. It’s OK to have muscles that are tired and slightly sore the day after. It’s not OK to experience any joint pain or sharp, stabbing pain during or after exercise, or anything that makes your chronic pain worse. If you experience any of these, seek advice from your healthcare professional as soon as possible.

That said, the most beneficial kind of exercise depends very much on the individual. One of Optimum Life’s key principles is that activity will always do more good if it’s something you enjoy. This is even more important when you experience chronic pain, when something you start dreading or tensing up about can quickly make your condition worse. Additionally, it helps if you choose activities that give you a good range of aerobic, strength, and flexibility exercises. Good potential choices to start with include walking, swimming, stationary cycling, yoga or t’ai chi.

Finally, be aware that exercise will be most helpful for pain management if it’s one out of many tools you use. Medication, diet, visualisation, relaxation, acupuncture and biofeedback have all been shown to have positive effects on pain individually - but the best effects seem to come from taking a multi-disciplinary approach. Take time to research the different therapies available to you. Chronic pain will never be fun to live with, but there are options available that make it more manageable. Give yourself the gift of being willing to try out different options until you find the combination that’s right for you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it. Doctors around the country are facing patients who come back with infections that are not cured by the antibiotics they prescribed. A staph resistant bacteria strain is becoming more and more common and our doctors need to start draining abscesses and taking cultures again. The new resistant staff requires fast treatment with specific antibiotics such as Cipromyacin and macrolids. Natural substances that fight and prevent bacterial infection include colloidial silver, Transfer Factor, garlic and Samento. Daniel Jernigan, an Epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is quoted as saying “Staph infections are such a common problem that the emergence of infections resistant to common antibiotics has important public health implications.”

Dr. Bonnie Bock, an infectious disease specialist in Newport Beach, California says “Most doctors are just not aware of this.” She has treated whole groups of secretaries, gay men and others for the resistant staph infections. She estimates two-thirds of the staph abscesses she currently encounters are caused by the resistant strain. These infections are unexpectedly aggressive; they multiply faster and make more of a toxin that inhibits our immune systems. If they aren’t treated with the right antibiotics quickly, they can easily become life threatening.

According to Elizabeth Bancroft, a medical epidemiologist at the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, around the year 2002 the incidence of staph resistant infections rose dramatically in the Los Angeles area. Then, during the spring of 2004, The Angeles Health Department was informed of a mini-epidemic of staph infections in a group of healthy newborns as well as an outbreak in a county jail, a cluster of infection within the gay male community and a cluster in a professional football team; the bacteria causing the outbreaks were nearly identical.

Furthermore, a study of children with staff resistant infections proved that at least 30% of people in close contact with the children had similar infections at the same time as the children. I was sitting on the third row crushed between a voluptuous looking lady and a man who sat by my right hand clutching a polythene bag as if his life depended on it. At my far left sat the lady who had had a quarrel with the guy who had usurped her seat but the guy had settled for a seat in the second row.

My brother and the voluptuous lady sitting at my left had had a squabble before we left the motor park. I had rested my luggage on my laps, which vexed her and she had told me not to discomfort her. My brother who had been standing by the door told her the bus was not her mother’s bedroom and I had to beg the lady as she got annoyed.

She had told me shortly after the bus had left the motor park to put the bag under my seat so as not to discomfort myself and in a polite manner too. As the vehicle raced through the potholed thoroughfare, we hit off on the right note discussing politics and then sports.

The lady with the tantalizing fanny who had stood in front of me when we queued to get in the bus was sitting on the back row, just behind me. Earlier on I had crawled into the back seat hoping to seat next to her. She seemed delighted to have me there as she shifted to create more room for me, but a guy sitting at the far corner told me someone had taken the seat.

So I had settled for the makeshift seat just beside the chubby looking lady with a gorgeous hairstyle. She was pretty but had mixed countenance. She could get rude one minute and the next minute she would be friendly and caring.

She collected the “Sun Newspaper” the man on my right had bought that morning and began flipping through the pages. I could not help but read the paper with her. The paper rustled against the breeze that came gushing into the bus through half opened windows. We fought with the breeze and had to forcefully but carefully tear open each page. Soon we read through the important news and handed the paper over to the owner. She told me that she liked sports but there were just a couple of columns that talked about sports. She had expected more sports columns.

The journey was long and agonizing. The sun was hot and rays filtered through the windows. Most of the passengers began to snore as sleep overtook them. I looked around; even the cute lady with the great fanny had her eyes closed and he head resting on the back of her seat.

I tried to keep my eyes on the road, shoving off the sleep that was threatening to engulf me. I did not succeed in my resolution. Before long my head began to drop lazily, it rested on the fleshy arm of the chubby lady. She had also fallen asleep beside me, with her head on her folded hand which was placed on the back of the seat in front.

I could not get a good sleep; as with every bump and sway my eyes would flicker open.

The remainder of the journey was uneventful until at about 2:30pm when we reached Keffi town. Our bus took a bend and entered a filling station. With legs as heavy as rods after sitting for almost 7 hours, we jumped down to stretch them and also take some air.

I bought myself a can of coke after a moment hesitation. I have not eaten anything since morning and I was not planning to for fear that I might be pressed by nature. The last thing I wanted to do was to ask the bus to stop because I wanted to pee or excrete waste product.

I popped the can open and took a long drag. It was soothing, as it trickled down my dry throat. I strolled around, within the premises of the filling station. I had a yell coming from the bus and turning around I saw the chubby lady beckoning.

We jumped back into the bus, resuming our original sitting position. The driver announced that a few miles from where we were we will eat lunch. He engaged gear and drove off.

The bus grinded to a halt some minutes later; on both sides of the road were eateries.

“Jump down everyone and go get a bite.” The bus conductor announced.

I picked a spot in front of a chemist shop and sat on the bench. With the can of coke still in hand I made myself as comfortable as can be. I did not dear to eat any food but I did justice to the content in the can and tossed the empty can into a gutter.

Twenty or so minutes later we all got back into the bus and a second phase of the journey began. The road stretched in front of us as the bus gathered speed. We were flagged to a stop every now and the by the police on check points only to be flagged through when they found out it was a state vehicle.
