New Poker Endurance Record
August 16th, 2010
Last year we wrote about Paul Zimbler playing poker games and tournaments for 72 hours straight, playing into delerium to set the world record for most consecutive hours played. Well, that record has been shattered by hours. Phil Laak decided that if he was going to break the record, he might as well really break itnot by seconds or minutes but by hours. In June of 2010 he played for a solid 115 hours.
Like Zimbler, Laak used charity as an incentive to keep playing poker online. Zimbler raised over £30,000 for charity when he played, and Laak pleged to donate 50% of his winnings to charity after his ironman poker run.
Laak was playing at the 10/20 stakes at the Bellagio and his reactions were strange to say the least. Updatiing those following him via Twitter, Laak wondered why he wasn’t “hallucinating yet.” Definitely odd considering that most people do everything they can to stay alert and aware when they’re playing poker.
Upon the breaking of the record, several fans arrived to cheer him on to which Laak calmly stated, “There’s a new sicko in town.” Masochist is more like it. But he wasn’t finished. Originally planning on staying for only 80 hours (did I really just say “only”?), Laak kept it up past the 80 hour mark saying that 90 was the new 80.
As his mental faculties began to take some serious decline from the lack of sleep, he did have quite the entertaining blog post around the 100 hour mark. “my team is becoming thinner as they must leave…must run solo op…yes I think I can…it is all good…the boat will be sinking and I will be running the bilge pumps…”
I think he finally got his hallucinations. And in true Everest Poker Francais player fashion, called it a night/day at hour 115 and hit the sack. 12 hours of sleep later, he was back on the interwebs, this time tweeting, “Woke up- had 2 bowls of cereal, then as an afterthought a ham sandwich. Thinking about going to play 10/20 at the Bellagio.”
While Laak only pledged half his winnings, which was about $3,000 to the charity, he ended up sending the whole 6k, along with donations from his supporters. The funds went to Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for children with life threatening illnesses.
Why Bad Beats Can Be a Good Thing
July 20th, 2010
I’ll be writing a different post after my next really bad beat, but hopefully that’s a long way off. For all the bad press that bad beats get, they’re actually good for the online poker community (wow, that sentence was harder to write than I thought it would be). Now don’t hurl your computer out the window in disgust of what I’ve just written, just hear me out for a second. Sit back down, stop yelling…there you go. Now don’t get me wrong-I hate bad beats and I wish they never ever happened to me. With that said, here are three things that I do like (or hate less) about bad beats.
They add tension to poker games. Some of the best poker scenes I’ve ever witnesses are those all-in moments when the hands are exposed and everyone’s waiting for the turn and the river. My heart never ceases to skip a beat right when the next card is turned. The possibility of a bad beat is what creates that dramatic tension.
They keep bad poker online players in the game. Bad beats reward bad play, which means that it encourages bad players to keep playing badly. For every bad beat that you suffer, you’ll win five or ten hands against that same opponent.
Sometimes you get them. As bad as they suck when you get a bad beat, you get really elated when you draw out against an opponent who has you beat. If you’ve got class, you’ll act embarrassed, but inside you’ll be doing jumping jacks. You don’t have to admit it, but I know it’s true.
Enjoy an Outing at a Brewery
July 8th, 2010
We all know where to come across the very best beers on the globe. We know how to select the greatest beers at the local pub. But have you ever considered a visit to your regional, independent brewery? Uncover the excitement waiting for you and exactly what to anticipate if you decide to do so! Interested in your beer and local practices? Ever been to a brewery? Well it could work out to be a good trip! There’s the 300 year-old brewery in Faversham, Kent in Southeast England. Shepard Neame has a guided tour that lasts about 80 minutes. They will demonstrate how they use the conventional brewing strategies yet merged with the latest technology and make a yummy assortment of of ‘Kentish Ales and speciality Lagers’. You will observe the traditional mash tuns, you’ll have a taste of the natural mineral water they use straight from the Brewery’s well in addition to stepping into a recreated coopers workshop. Probably the finest section of the tour is that all audience member contribution is invited! You will taste the hops and some other ingredients that go into producing the finest of the finest local beers. The whole visit here usually takes about 2 hours, including the tasting and the Brewery Store visit where you can buy souvenirs and of course take home some tasty beer! A further place to check out for a tour of a very fine brewery is The Hogs Back Brewery, which is situated in the village of Tongham, Surrey, between Farnham and Guildford just off the A31 ?Hogs Back? road. It is found within 16th century farm buildings in this quaint little village. You may expect a large amount of sampling of the award winning beers, and ales they produce. ‘Our flagship real ale, ?TEA? (Traditional English Ale), has proved to be a favourite of cask conditioned ale drinkers throughout the UK and is the proud winner of many awards’. Going to local independent breweries is like a walk in the park with unique little treats, taste-testing a lot of different flavors of beers and ales. The majority of the breweries have cute little dining establishments where you can go and eat a magnificent meal after all of the walking around. You may even feel a little drunk subsequent to all the sampling! In 1970 there became a new progression and movement in microbreweries. Small business entrepreneurs turned a small business with ample profit to producing prime quality brews that sell in the UK and abroad. These microbreweries also offer tours as well. Boredom at the Poker Table
December 16th, 2009
Boredom can be your worst enemy at the poker table. If you aren’t getting any good poker hands, it’s easy to get impatient and start playing hands regardless of their value, and that can lead to disaster. A few reckless actions can undo an entire night’s work in a matter of minutes. The safest way to handle a dry streak is to just keep folding and ride it out, but some people just can’t sit still for that long. If you’ve got the cash to spend and you just have to play a casino hand, take a shot at bluffing a pot. Here are a few tips on making the most out of nothing. If you’re going to move on a pot, do it from the late position. If you’re last to act, you can see what your opponents are thinking about their cards. If you are seeing a lot of folding or limping in before the pot, then your opponents are showing weakness-now’s the time to bluff. I like to bet 5 to 10 times the minimum bet, because it seems to clean out the majority of the table and allows me to put the callers on a good hand. If you luck out and flop a good hand, you’re set.
Snap Chinese Lanterns
November 11th, 2009
Chinese Lanterns have been very popular this year and the squad at Chinese Lanterns have had some great fun trying to capture decent pic’s on film of these beautiful lanterns Well to be honest not actually on film as we tend to favor the convenience digital camera’s offer; Instant review and edit of your snaps also the storage of hundreds of snaps per memory stick is a very attention-getting quality. Makes a nice change from the mere 24 pics my old Kodak instamatic could cope with. Video recording is now a handy included extra for some impromptu Spielberg bits and is littering the webspace known as YouTube as you digest this.I recently purchased a fresh camera and can assure you it was an committed and long process. With so many brands models and technical features to come to grips with and that’s before taking into account the reviews that tend to oppose each other to some extent. It’s common to get overcome by it all. I found that using a site like dpreview.com is very handy as it breaks the camera’s into families such as compact, prosumer etc. It also has user established content and some well written articles on the different models. But after all that the decison does actually and figuratively rest in your grip.
Don’t Washout, Bowl Competitively with the Right Bowling Advise
July 27th, 2009
Here at the bowling center I usually find a part-time bowler hoping to take on real bowling with new respect. When bowling is your goal, you’ve stumbled upon a crucial beginning in learning the game as a dedicated bowler. Our “Next Steps” handbook to bowling perfection may take your game to new levels. An expert in a nearby bowling pro shop want their customers develop bowling talent. There’s an old bowling adage, aim the balls at the pins and let them roll. Just kidding. I admit, if only it were that simple. No worry, our bowling experts have you throwing the best way we know how.
Most importantly, invest a little in tailored bowling supplies at a nearby bowling pro shop. You’ll notice a difference with your own stuff. I promise, have your favorite ball drilled for custom finger holes, and you can make more of your practice time. A properly fitted bowling ball can make a substantial improvement in your game. The same goes for sliding out your final step in actual bowling shoes that haven’t been worn out by a million people!
If you may have previous purchased the right supplies, listen to another important piece of bowling advice: aim how the pros aim. While you hold the ball, don’t actually aim for the back of the lane. Use the markings like a barrel of a gun. Ever noticed them? It’s less difficult to roll through a an aid marker that is nearer. To take full advantage, make sure you aim from the same position 4 steps from the foul line with every roll. Only then you can fine-tune your accuracy and angle.
As for spin, to achieve their desired pin action? It is the third-most essential bowler tip. It’s all in the ball type. Actually, professional bowlers pack several types of bowling balls to pull off amazing hooks, selected precisely for the type of game and lane. But greenhorns might want to avoid putting on a show, and don’t get a ball that is too heavy for you. Some avid bowlers opt for bowling balls featuring reactive materials. But these special-made balls regularly make even decent pros look like beginners. And that does it for our first three bowling tips. I’ll be back with another 3 soon.
-Michael Chase
We roll strikes for our team (the “Strykers”) comprised of morning shift for our marketing business just outside Plano, Texas. I offer advice to aspiring bowlers online and at the lanes. Also, I gotta give a shout out to my bowling buddies at the finals in Atlantic City. Go Pinheads, Go!
Dangerous Flops
May 6th, 2009
Flops are the moment of truth for every poker hand. All the conjecture and guesswork go out the casino door, and most poker players find out what they need to know when they see the flop. Some flops are relatively benign, and it’s immediately apparent what you should do. If you stayed in the hand with a 4-5 suited and the flop comes out A-K-8 and your suit doesn’t hit, you know that you probably want to fold. Those flops aren’t trouble, because they don’t mess with your head. It’s the flops that temp you to make a desperate move that are dangerous. If you’ve got a King-4 and you stay in the hand, catching a four on the flop can get you into some trouble. If the flop comes out 10-8-4, you may be tempted to stay in the hand and call whatever raise might come at you. You’re hoping for a king to give you two pair or another four to give you a set, but chasing this hand is just a bad idea. Another scary hand is the chaser. If you’ve got a 2-6 of spades and you get another spade or two on the flop, you might want to chase your flush, ignoring the over cards that are likely to be in other players hands.
